If anxiety is running the show, it is exhausting. Racing thoughts. Tight chest. Overthinking at 2am. Smiling on the outside while your nervous system is doing the London Marathon on the inside.
You are not broken. Your brain is simply stuck in protection mode.
At Acorn Natural Health Centre in Heanor, Sally Race specialises in clinical hypnotherapy for anxiety and anxiety related conditions including panic attacks, phobias, trauma responses, health anxiety and stress overload. The aim is not to “manage” anxiety forever. It is to retrain your mind so unnecessary anxiety stops dominating your life.
Clinical hypnotherapy is widely used to support a range of anxiety related issues:
Generalised anxiety
Panic attacks
Social anxiety
Health anxiety
Stress and overwhelm
Anxiety related sleep problems
Phobias
Trauma responses
IBS linked to stress
Public speaking anxiety
Confidence and self esteem
Exam nerves and performance anxiety
Weight loss and emotional eating
Stopping smoking
Let’s clear something up. You do not lose control. You do not go to sleep. You do not cluck like a chicken.
Clinical hypnosis is a deeply relaxed yet focused state. You remain fully aware and in control at all times. In this calm state, the conscious mind steps slightly aside, allowing the subconscious mind to become more open to positive change.
Why does that matter?
Because anxiety is not logical. You cannot think your way out of a nervous system that believes it is under threat. Anxiety patterns are stored at a subconscious level. That is where lasting change needs to happen.
Clinical hypnotherapy works by:
Calming the overactive stress response
Reducing physical symptoms of anxiety
Interrupting spiralling thoughts
Rewiring anxious patterns
Strengthening emotional resilience
Building genuine confidence
This is not about suppressing symptoms. It is about retraining your brain.
Anxiety keeps your nervous system on high alert. Even when nothing is wrong, your body behaves as though it is.
During sessions at Acorn Natural Health Centre in Heanor, we:
Identify your specific anxiety triggers
Clarify your goals clearly and practically
Use targeted clinical hypnosis techniques
Help your brain process stuck emotional responses
Strengthen calmer, healthier mental patterns
Over time, anxious reactions soften. Situations that once felt overwhelming begin to feel manageable. Sleep improves. Confidence grows. You feel more like yourself again.
That shift can be surprisingly powerful.
The first session focuses on detailed goal setting. We get crystal clear about what you want to change. No one can make you do anything you do not want to do. You are always in control.
Before booking a full session, a *free 20 minute consultation is offered. This gives you the chance to:
Ask questions
Understand how hypnotherapy works
Decide whether it feels right for you
There is never any pressure to continue. Therapy has to feel safe and aligned.
*£5 on booking, refunded after appointment

Hello, I’m Sally Race, Clinical Hypnotherapist at Acorn Natural Health Centre in Heanor.
I hold a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy and an Honours Degree in Occupational Therapy. I am also a registered member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy, meaning I am fully qualified, insured and committed to high professional standards.
For me, therapy is not just about qualifications. It is about helping people create meaningful, lasting change. Whether that is freedom from anxiety, overcoming panic attacks, improving confidence, addressing IBS symptoms, or achieving sustainable weight loss, my focus is always on helping you move forward in a way that feels realistic and empowering.
Professional Background and Experience
Before moving into full time private practice, I worked for many years within the NHS as a Senior Occupational Therapist. During that time I:
Delivered stress management groups within a cardiac rehabilitation team
Supported individuals one to one with anxiety, overthinking and panic attacks
Taught rehabilitation skills including cognition, perception and neuroplasticity at the University of Derby
Lectured at Derby College
Delivered workshops for both NHS and private healthcare professionals
This clinical background gives me a strong understanding of how the brain, nervous system and behaviour interact. It also means my approach to hypnotherapy for anxiety and related conditions is grounded in evidence, not guesswork.
Private Practice Since 2005
I have been working in private practice since 2005, supporting clients across Derbyshire and beyond.
While I use a range of therapeutic approaches, my core methods are:
Clinical Hypnotherapy
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Hypnotherapy and NLP are particularly powerful because they work at a subconscious level, often allowing us to reach the root of anxiety patterns, phobias, trauma responses and unwanted habits more efficiently. CBT and other evidence based approaches are integrated when they will enhance the outcome.
The aim is always the same. To create change that lasts.
Specialist Interests
Some people jokingly call me a bit of a research enthusiast. I take that as a compliment.
I regularly read the latest research on anxiety disorders, panic attacks, weight management, IBS and the science of behaviour change. I attend professional development courses to stay up to date with current evidence and best practice.
When I come across valuable new insights, I often share them on social media and write educational blog posts. You can explore helpful articles and resources on my blog at Derbyshire Hypnotherapy.
Staying informed means my clients benefit from approaches that reflect modern neuroscience and practical psychology.
