The lymphatic system plays an important role in keeping the body healthy. It helps remove excess fluid, waste products and unwanted substances from tissues while supporting the body's natural immune and healing processes.
When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish or overwhelmed, fluid can accumulate, swelling may occur, and recovery from injury, illness or surgery can take longer.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage is a specialised treatment designed to support the natural movement of lymph throughout the body using gentle, rhythmic techniques.
At Acorn Natural Health Centre in Heanor, MLD is provided by George Timby, a Sports Massage Therapist with a BSc in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle and precise massage technique that focuses on stimulating lymph flow.
Unlike deep tissue massage or sports massage, MLD uses light, rhythmic movements designed to encourage the lymphatic system to transport fluid and waste products more effectively.
The treatment is deeply relaxing while also supporting the body's natural recovery and drainage processes.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may help to:
• Reduce swelling and fluid retention
• Support recovery following injury
• Assist post-operative healing
• Promote healthy lymphatic circulation
• Support the body's natural detoxification processes
• Encourage relaxation and stress reduction
• Improve skin appearance and reduce puffiness
• Support overall wellbeing
MLD is widely used to help reduce swelling caused by injury, surgery and fluid retention.
By encouraging lymphatic flow, excess fluid can be moved away from congested tissues more efficiently, helping improve comfort and recovery.
Swelling and bruising are common following many surgical procedures.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is often used as part of post-operative recovery to help reduce fluid build-up, improve circulation and support the body's healing process.
The lymphatic system is closely linked to immune function.
By supporting healthy lymph movement, MLD helps the body clear waste products and transport immune cells throughout the body.
Although MLD is a clinical treatment, many clients find it extremely relaxing.
The slow, gentle and repetitive movements can help calm the nervous system, leaving people feeling lighter, calmer and more comfortable.
By improving lymphatic drainage, MLD may help reduce puffiness and improve the appearance of the skin.
It is often chosen by people looking to support skin health, particularly where fluid retention contributes to facial or body puffiness.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is very different from traditional massage.
The pressure used is light and gentle, focusing on the lymphatic pathways rather than the muscles themselves.
The treatment is comfortable, relaxing and suitable for people who may not enjoy deeper massage techniques.

Hello, I’m George Timby, a fully qualified Sports Massage Therapist with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation.
My journey into sports therapy began after a serious football injury that led me to discover a passion for rehabilitation, strengthening, and conditioning. After undergoing surgery and sports therapy for my knee, I experienced first-hand the benefits of effective treatment and recovery, allowing me to return to the sport I love. This inspired me to dedicate my career to helping others overcome their injuries and achieve their full physical potential.
Growing up in Heanor, I played football for Heanor Town and Derby County Community Trust during my college years. Alongside football, I found a love for running and trained for my first marathon in my second year at Derby College. Unfortunately, the combination of these activities took a toll on my body, resulting in a knee injury that required surgery. However, the rehabilitation process not only restored my fitness but sparked a passion for helping others recover and regain their strength.
As a sports massage therapist, my goal is to tailor treatment to each client’s specific needs—whether you're recovering from an injury, aiming to improve performance, or simply seeking relief from everyday aches and pains. I use therapeutic techniques designed to promote recovery, reduce pain, and improve mobility.
Sports massage therapy isn't just for injury recovery—it’s also for injury prevention, a concept known as Prehab. My goal is to help you prepare your body for whatever life throws at it, whether that’s a demanding workout, a long shift at work, or an active lifestyle. Through targeted massage therapy, I help keep your body in optimal condition, ready for action.
If you’re looking to recover from an injury or enhance your physical performance, I’d be honoured to help you reach your goals. Together, we’ll work towards getting you back to full fitness so you can do what you love—without pain holding you back!
